The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Republic of Kenya officially established diplomatic relations in January 2024, marking an important milestone in strengthening cooperation between the Caribbean and Africa. The agreement was formalized during the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit held in Kampala, Uganda.

The communiqué was signed by the Hon. Alfred Sears, Minister of Immigration and National Insurance of The Bahamas, and Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of Kenya. The establishment of diplomatic relations reflects a shared commitment to fostering deeper cooperation, mutual understanding, and long-term partnership between the two nations.

This historic development represents part of The Bahamas’ broader engagement with Sub-Saharan Africa and South-South cooperation initiatives. Both countries acknowledged the importance of building stronger diplomatic, economic, cultural, and educational ties for the benefit of their citizens and future generations.

Among the key discussions was the importance of establishing diplomatic representation in each other’s capitals, with plans to open embassies in Nairobi and Nassau when feasible. Such representation is expected to strengthen bilateral engagement, improve communication, and create new opportunities for collaboration across multiple sectors.

The Bahamas and Kenya also explored opportunities for cooperation in trade and investment, recognizing the economic potential that exists between the Caribbean and East Africa. Both nations expressed interest in creating an enabling environment for investment partnerships, tourism growth, and the exchange of goods and services.

Education and knowledge exchange emerged as another important area of cooperation. Discussions highlighted the value of academic partnerships between Bahamian and Kenyan universities through collaborative research, innovation, and student exchange programs aimed at strengthening human capital development in both countries.
